This grand monument stands on the square between Vienna's two great imperial museums, honouring the empress Maria Theresa. Unveiled in 1888, it centres on a large seated bronze statue of the empress atop a tiered pedestal decorated with equestrian figures, statesmen, and scholars of her reign. The composition celebrates her reforms in law, education, and the military. Framed by the twin façades of the natural history and art history museums, it forms a monumental centrepiece.
