The Volksgarten is a formal public garden in central Vienna, laid out in 1821 on the site of former city fortifications destroyed by Napoleon. Among the first imperial gardens opened to the public, it is famous for its extensive rose garden, with hundreds of varieties arranged around gravel paths and clipped hedges. A neoclassical temple modelled on the Theseion in Athens stands amid the beds, and a memorial to Empress Elisabeth sits in a quiet corner. The garden lies between the parliament and the imperial palace.
