A Benedictine abbey occupying a rocky promontory above the Danube at the western entrance to the Wachau valley, Melk Abbey is one of the grandest examples of Baroque ecclesiastical architecture in the German-speaking world. The current abbey church was completed in 1736 and its twin towers are visible from the river kilometres away. The abbey library, housing over 100,000 volumes and illuminated manuscripts, is one of the most celebrated monastic libraries in Austria.
