A limestone ridge that forms the immediate northern backdrop of Innsbruck, the Nordkette rises abruptly from the Inn valley floor to its highest point, the Hafelekar, at 2,334 metres. The Nordkettenbahn — a series of funicular and aerial cableways connecting the city to the summit — was designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2007. The high terrain offers year-round ski and snowboard terrain and, in summer, marked hiking routes along the ridge with views of more than 150 peaks.
