This funicular links the centre of Innsbruck with the hillside suburb of Hungerburg, from where cable cars continue up to the peaks of the Nordkette. Reopened in 2007 with futuristic stations of curved glass designed by Zaha Hadid, its cars climb steeply and cross the river Inn on a bridge before reaching the terrace above the city. The stations, evoking sheets of ice, have become landmarks in their own right. The line forms the first stage of a swift ascent from the old town to the high Alpine ridge in under half an hour.
