Known as the Ferdinandeum, this is the principal museum of the Tyrol, founded in 1823 to gather the art and history of the Alpine province. Its collections range from Bronze Age and Roman finds through medieval altarpieces and Gothic sculpture to Dutch and Austrian paintings. A notable holding is the original relief model of the Tyrol and a strong section on the region's Gothic art. Housed in a nineteenth-century building near the old town, it anchors a group of museums run by the same institution across the city.
