The Triumphal Arch stands at the southern end of Innsbruck's main street, a stone gateway built in 1765 for the wedding of the future Emperor Leopold. Modelled on Roman arches, it carries reliefs that mark both the marriage and the sudden death of Emperor Francis, who died during the celebrations, giving one face a joyful and the other a mournful theme. It framed the ceremonial route into the city for the imperial party. Today it anchors the vista down Maria-Theresien-Strasse toward the old town and the mountains.
