A medieval walled town in the Tyrolian Alps that became one of Europe's premier ski resorts in the early 20th century, Kitzbühel is best known internationally for the Hahnenkamm downhill race, held annually on the steep Streif course. The pastel-painted pedestrian inner town retains its 15th and 16th-century street plan and tower gates. In summer the surrounding hills offer an extensive network of lift-served mountain biking and walking trails.
