The largest lake entirely within Austria, Attersee stretches nearly 20 kilometres through the eastern Salzkammergut between the Höllengebirge ridges. Its deep, exceptionally clear water shifts in colour from cobalt to turquoise depending on light and depth, making it popular for sailing, diving, and swimming. Gustav Klimt spent several summers on its shores and painted the surrounding landscape in a series of celebrated square-format canvases.
