A 48-kilometre high mountain road crossing the Hohe Tauern range between Bruck in Salzburg state and Heiligenblut in Carinthia, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road reaches its highest point at the Edelweißspitze at 2,571 metres. The road was completed in 1935 as one of the great engineering projects of interwar Austria and passes through a wide vertical belt of alpine habitats. The paved spur to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe viewpoint delivers a direct prospect of the Grossglockner summit and the Pasterze glacier below.
