Barbados, all of it.
35 curated places across 4 regions — photographed, mapped, and noted with the season each is best in.
Barbados reads below in 4 chapters — Saint Joseph, Saint Peter, Saint Philip and Christ Church — in any order you like.
Chapter I · Saint Joseph · 5 places
Saint Joseph
A hillside garden above Bathsheba begun in 1954 by horticulturist Iris Bannochie, layered with orchids, palms, heliconias, and a celebrated bearded fig tree. Streams thread the six-acre site, and terraces open onto views of the Atlantic coastline below.
Chapter II · Saint Peter · 5 places
Saint Peter
This narrow-gauge heritage railway winds through the grounds of a 17th-century sugar estate in the northern hills of Barbados, carrying passengers by steam locomotive to a ridge-top viewpoint. The line was laid in recent years to interpret the estate's plantation landscape and gives sweeping vistas over the wild Scotland District and the Atlantic coast. It complements the estate's Jacobean great house and working rum distillery. The restored engine and open carriages recall the sugar tramways that once crossed the island.

Chapter III · Saint Philip · 3 places
Saint Philip
A secluded cove framed by tall coconut palms and eroded coral outcrops on the southeastern shore. The pounding Atlantic swell and cliff-top views draw walkers and photographers rather than swimmers.
Chapter IV · Christ Church · 2 places
Christ Church
A fishing town on the south coast of Barbados best known for its Friday night fish fry, when grills fill the air with the smell of flying fish and marlin while soca and calypso play late into the evening. By day the fish market and nearby Miami Beach give a feel for everyday Bajan life.
