Streets wander in Bridgetown where Spanish colonial towns would march in straight lines: the Barbadian capital grew organically from the 17th century, its serpentine plan a distinctly English approach to building an Atlantic empire. Merchant houses, churches and public buildings of the 17th to 19th centuries survive alongside the nearby Garrison, an extensive ensemble of historic military architecture. UNESCO inscribed Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison in 2011.
