This public park on the northern edge of central Bridgetown was once the residence of the general commanding British troops in the West Indies before opening to the public in 1909. Its grounds hold a small theatre and gallery in the former officers' quarters and a celebrated baobab tree over 300 years old, said to be among the largest in the Caribbean and imported from Africa. Mature specimen trees, broad lawns, and a Victorian bandstand make it a shaded green retreat from the surrounding city streets.
