Housed in a former British military prison within the Garrison, this museum was founded in 1933 and preserves the material heritage of Barbados across galleries devoted to Amerindian settlement, plantation slavery, natural history, and decorative arts. The 19th-century cellblock retains its arched corridors, now lined with maps, ceramics, furniture, and archival documents. The Shilstone Memorial Library holds rare Caribbean records. Exhibits trace the island from Indigenous habitation through emancipation to independence.
