Chapter I · Port of Spain · 9 places
Port of Spain
This distinctive red-painted seat of the national parliament dominates central Port of Spain, its twin domed towers rising above Woodford Square. The current Beaux-Arts building opened in 1907 after an earlier structure was burned during riots, and it has been the theatre of major political events including a 1990 attempted coup. Recent restoration uncovered pre-Columbian Amerindian remains beneath the floor. Guided visits interpret the chambers, the rotunda, and the building's central role in Trinidadian public life.
Chapter II · Siparia Regional Corporation · 3 places
Siparia Regional Corporation
The largest natural deposit of asphalt on Earth, a forty-hectare expanse of slowly churning black pitch at La Brea in southwest Trinidad. Walter Raleigh caulked his ships here in 1595, its tar has paved streets from London to New York, and warm sulphurous pools on its surface are used for bathing.

Chapter III · Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo · 2 places
Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo
A Hindu temple standing on a causeway in the Gulf of Paria at Waterloo, begun by indentured labourer Sewdass Sadhu, who hauled materials into the sea by bicycle after being barred from building on land. The rebuilt octagonal mandir and its prayer flags are a moving symbol of Indo-Trinidadian perseverance.
Chapter IV · Diego Martin Regional Corporation · 1 place
Diego Martin Regional Corporation
A limestone cave on Gaspar Grande island off Trinidad's northwest, reached by boat. A stairway descends to a clear tidal pool deep within the chamber, lit by shafts of daylight.
