This nature reserve occupies a wooded enclave within the grounds of a large oil refinery on Trinidad's western coast, an unlikely sanctuary created in 1966 to breed and protect endangered wetland birds. Lakes and trails support waterfowl, the scarlet ibis, and other native species, and the trust runs conservation and education programmes. A small learning centre displays Amerindian artefacts and information on local ecology. It stands as an early Caribbean example of industry-supported wildlife conservation.
