Founded in 1892 and housed in a colonial building at the top of Frederick Street, this is the country's principal museum, covering geology, the petroleum industry, Amerindian and colonial history, and the visual arts. Galleries display works by the Trinidadian painter Michel-Jean Cazabon alongside Carnival costumes and archaeological finds. The collection traces the twin islands from their Indigenous inhabitants through Spanish, French, and British rule to the modern republic. It anchors the cultural quarter near the Savannah.
