Chapter II · Kilifi County · 11 places

Kilifi County

Watamu is a small coastal town north of Malindi whose shoreline forms part of the Watamu Marine National Park, a Biosphere Reserve protecting an extensive coral garden and some of Kenya's most accessible sea turtle nesting beaches. Three interconnected bays of white sand are sheltered by a natural coral breakwater, producing calm, shallow water suited to snorkelling at low tide. Whale sharks visit the waters seasonally between October and March.

Chapter III · Mombasa County · 7 places

Mombasa County

A 16th-century Portuguese fortress guarding the entrance to Mombasa's Old Town harbor and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its massive coral-stone walls trace the layered history of Swahili, Portuguese, and Omani rule on the coast.

Chapter IV · Lamu County · 6 places

Lamu County

Lamu island and its medieval Swahili town represent the oldest continually inhabited settlement on the East African coast, with coral-stone architecture, carved wooden doors, and narrow donkey-pathed lanes that have changed little since the 14th century. The town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its preserved urban fabric and the living culture of its majority Muslim population. Traditional dhow sailing and the annual Lamu Cultural Festival remain central to its identity.
