Lake Nakuru is a shallow, alkaline lake in the Rift Valley famous for its periodic flamingo concentrations, which once numbered in the millions and turned the shoreline vivid pink. Within the national park surrounding it, white and black rhinos have been successfully reintroduced, and Rothschild's giraffe and Defassa waterbuck are common. The lake level has risen significantly in recent years, altering but not eliminating the birdlife spectacle.
