Tsavo East is Kenya's largest national park, an arid wilderness of red laterite plains, lava flows, and the permanent Galana River. It is known for its dust-red elephants, who coat themselves in the iron-rich soil, and for Mudanda Rock, a natural dam where hundreds of elephants gather in the dry season. The Yatta Plateau, one of the world's longest lava flows, bisects the park and supports a distinct scrub habitat.
