The Aberdare Range rises to over 4,000 metres above the central Kenyan highlands, its upper moorlands draped in giant heather and bisected by cascading waterfalls including the Gura and Karuru falls. The park's dense montane forest shelters secretive bongo antelope, black leopards, and forest elephants, best glimpsed at night from the famous tree lodges built over floodlit waterholes. Trout streams and bamboo zone transitions add to the ecological diversity.
