Meru lies northeast of Mount Kenya in a transition zone between highland and semi-arid savanna, watered by fourteen rivers flowing from the mountain's slopes. The park gained fame as the setting for Joy Adamson's lion rehabilitation work and is now recovering after decades of heavy poaching, with black and white rhinos returned to a sanctuary. Its relative remoteness means visitor numbers stay low, offering an uncrowded safari experience in varied woodland and doum-palm riverine habitat.
