Chapter I · Amman Governorate · 18 places
Amman Governorate
A hilltop site at the heart of Amman layered with Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad remains. Its Temple of Hercules columns and domed palace overlook the amphitheatre and sprawl of the capital below.
Chapter II · Ma'an Governorate · 6 places
Ma'an Governorate
A dramatic sandstone valley whose narrow gorge, the Siq, winds between towering rose-colored cliffs. The gorge frames the carved facades of the ancient Nabataean city nearby.

Chapter III · Madaba Governorate · 6 places
Madaba Governorate
A dramatic canyon carved through the Jordanian plateau by the Mujib River before it enters the Dead Sea at roughly 400 metres below sea level, giving this reserve the lowest altitude nature reserve designation in the world. The canyon walls rise hundreds of metres above a rocky stream that hikers wade through on the main Siq Trail route. The water-filled lower canyon gorge is passable only in summer when water levels are manageable, and involves swimming across pools between basalt boulders. The ecological transition from plateau to the Dead Sea rift valley within the reserve supports a range of raptors and rare plants.
Chapter IV · Aqaba Governorate · 5 places
Aqaba Governorate
A protected desert valley in southern Jordan characterised by massive sandstone and granite formations rising from a flat red-sand floor, some reaching 1,700 metres in elevation. The interplay of rock colour — deep burgundy, ochre, and rose — shifts dramatically through the day, with pre-dawn blue light and the minutes around sunrise and sunset offering the most intense photographic conditions. The area was used as a base by T.E. Lawrence during the Arab Revolt and has served as a stand-in for Mars in multiple film productions. Overnight camps beneath the open sky allow observation of exceptional star density.
