A dramatic canyon carved through the Jordanian plateau by the Mujib River before it enters the Dead Sea at roughly 400 metres below sea level, giving this reserve the lowest altitude nature reserve designation in the world. The canyon walls rise hundreds of metres above a rocky stream that hikers wade through on the main Siq Trail route. The water-filled lower canyon gorge is passable only in summer when water levels are manageable, and involves swimming across pools between basalt boulders. The ecological transition from plateau to the Dead Sea rift valley within the reserve supports a range of raptors and rare plants.
