A hypersaline lake on the border between Jordan and Israel, lying at the lowest elevation of any land surface on Earth at roughly 430 metres below sea level. The salt concentration, approximately ten times that of the ocean, makes the water unpleasant for most aquatic life but allows humans to float effortlessly on the surface without swimming. The Jordanian eastern shore has a concentration of spa and beach resorts making use of the mineral-rich mud and water. The haze-diffused light over the water and the contrast of white salt crystals against blue water produce unusual photographic conditions.
