Jordan's only coastal city, situated at the northern tip of the Red Sea's Gulf of Aqaba where Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia share a narrow strip of coastline. The waters immediately offshore contain healthy coral reefs accessible from the beach, with numerous dive sites within a short boat ride. The town has a compact historic centre with the remains of a medieval Islamic fort near the water. The year-round warmth and calm sea conditions make it a practical winter beach destination from the colder Jordanian plateau.
