Israel's southernmost city, situated at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba on a narrow strip of Red Sea coastline between the Negev Desert and the Jordanian border. The coral reefs immediately offshore at Coral Beach are protected within a nature reserve and represent the northernmost healthy coral reef system in the Red Sea. The surrounding desert mountains descend sharply to the water's edge, making the transition from arid landscape to tropical-style reef marine environment unusually abrupt. The city receives almost no rainfall and maintains warm temperatures year-round.
