The Temple of Hercules crowns the Amman Citadel on Jabal al-Qala'a, the highest of the city's hills. Built during the Roman period under Marcus Aurelius, its towering columns and podium once supported a temple that overlooked the ancient city. Nearby lie the fragments of a colossal marble hand and elbow, all that survives of a giant statue thought to depict Hercules. The site offers sweeping views across the downtown bowl toward the Roman theatre, and forms part of the wider citadel complex layered with Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad remains.
