La Paz Department
Bolivia's seat of government sits in a steep canyon at an average elevation of 3,600 meters, with the altiplano above and the satellite city of El Alto on the canyon rim. The Mi Teleférico cable-car system spans multiple lines connecting different neighborhoods, providing aerial views of the densely packed city against the backdrop of the Illimani massif at 6,438 meters. The Witches' Market in the Sagarnaga street area sells Andean ritual items alongside textiles and crafts.

Potosí Department
A colonial city at 4,090 meters with a UNESCO-listed historic center built on the wealth extracted from the Cerro Rico silver mountain that dominates the skyline. At its peak in the seventeenth century, Potosí was one of the largest cities in the Western Hemisphere and a center of baroque architecture funded by silver production. Tours of the still-operating Cerro Rico cooperative mines offer access to active tunnels and the context of Bolivia's colonial-era mining history.

Between 1696 and 1760, six ensembles of reducciones (settlements of Christianized Indians) inspired by the ‘ideal cities’ of the 16th-century philosophers were founded by the Jesuits in a style that married Catholic architecture with local traditions. The six that remain – San Francisco Javier, Concepción, Santa Ana, San Miguel, San Rafael and San José – make up a living heritage on the former territory of the Chiquitos.
