A whole hilltop served as the canvas at Samaipata, where a vast rock on the eastern flank of the Andes is covered in carved channels, niches and animal figures — a ceremonial centre in use into the 14th to 16th centuries, with the settlement's administrative and residential quarters spread below. No sculptured monument of its kind exists anywhere else in the Americas. UNESCO inscribed El Fuerte de Samaipata in 1998.
