Between 1696 and 1760 the Jesuits founded settlements in Bolivia's eastern lowlands modelled on the 'ideal cities' imagined by Renaissance philosophers, joining Catholic architecture to Chiquitano craft and tradition. Six survive — Concepción, San Francisco Javier, San Miguel, Santa Ana, San Rafael and San José — still living towns whose churches guard a celebrated legacy of mission Baroque music. UNESCO inscribed the Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos in 1990.
