Buddha Jayanti Park lies on the wooded Ridge in central New Delhi, laid out in the 1960s to mark twenty-five centuries of Buddhism. Its undulating grounds of lawns, flowering shrubs and forest paths centre on a gilded statue of the Buddha set on an island, with a sapling said to descend from the tree under which he attained enlightenment. Quieter than the city's monument gardens, it draws walkers, meditators and picnicking families. The wooded setting on the Ridge gives it a natural, contemplative atmosphere amid the busy capital.
