The Dormition Abbey is a German Benedictine church and monastery on Mount Zion, just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. Completed in the early 20th century on land granted to the German emperor, it marks the traditional site where the Virgin Mary is said to have fallen into eternal sleep. Its round, fortress-like church is topped by a conical dome and flanked by a tall bell tower, with a crypt below holding a statue of the reclining Mary. The abbey's mosaics and organ concerts draw both pilgrims and visitors.
