The Cardo is the excavated remnant of the main north–south street of Roman and Byzantine Jerusalem, running through the restored Jewish Quarter of the Old City. Once a broad colonnaded avenue, sections of its stone paving and reconstructed columns are displayed at their original level, several metres below the modern streets. The route is depicted on the 6th-century Madaba mosaic map. Today part of the Cardo is lined with galleries and shops built into the ancient arcades, along a thoroughfare centuries old.
