One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, situated in the Judean Hills, and serving as a focal point of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic religious life. The walled Old City contains the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque within less than one square kilometre. The stone alleyways of the Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Armenian quarters each carry distinct architectural and cultural characters. The city's elevated position and pale limestone construction give it an unusual quality of light, particularly in the late afternoon.
