Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of the holiest sites in Islam, standing on the raised esplanade in the Old City of Jerusalem known to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif. The silver-grey domed congregational mosque, first built in the early Islamic period and repeatedly rebuilt after earthquakes, occupies the southern side of the platform. It is revered as the destination of the Prophet Muhammad's night journey. The wider compound, shared with the golden Dome of the Rock, draws worshippers and pilgrims from across the Muslim world.
