The Church of the Redeemer is a Lutheran church in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, standing close to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Consecrated in 1898 in the presence of the German emperor, it was built on the site of a medieval church of the Knights Hospitaller. Its plain Romanesque style contrasts with the ornate neighbouring shrines. Visitors can climb the tall bell tower for one of the finest panoramas over the rooftops of the Old City, and excavations beneath the church reveal ancient layers of Jerusalem.
