Within roughly a square kilometre of walled streets, the Old City of Jerusalem concentrates holy ground for Judaism, Christianity and Islam: the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre sheltering the tomb of Christ, and the 7th-century Dome of the Rock gleaming above some 220 historic monuments. Proposed by Jordan, the city and its walls joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981 and have stood on the List of World Heritage in Danger since the following year.
