The Jaffa Gate is one of the main western entrances to the Old City of Jerusalem, historically the route toward the port of Jaffa and the coast. Built in the 16th century as part of the Ottoman walls, its L-shaped passage was designed to slow attackers, though a wider breach was later opened in the wall to allow a visiting German emperor's carriage to pass. The gate stands beside the citadel and opens onto the Christian and Armenian quarters. It remains a major hub linking the walled city with the modern districts outside.
