Mishkenot Sha'ananim was the first Jewish neighbourhood built outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, established in 1860 with support from the philanthropist Moses Montefiore. Its long row of almshouses, protected behind a wall, offered an alternative to the crowded conditions within the city. Restored in later years, the complex is now a cultural and guesthouse centre hosting writers and artists, beside the Montefiore windmill. It marks an early step in the city's expansion beyond the ramparts.
