Chapter II · Brașov County · 19 places

Brașov County

Bran Castle rises dramatically on a rocky ridge at the narrow Bran Pass on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. Built in the 14th century and subsequently controlled by a succession of Transylvanian rulers and Wallachian princes, its compact towers and timber-balconied galleries have made it one of the most photographed castles in Eastern Europe. The interior preserves collections of medieval arms, furniture, and ceramics.

Cluj County

A former salt mine near Turda converted into an underground attraction, with a subterranean lake, boats, and a small amusement area far below ground. The cavernous chambers stay cool year-round.
