The Transfăgărășan is a high-altitude road crossing the Făgăraș Mountains of the Southern Carpathians, cresting at 2,042 metres near Bâlea Lake. Built in the 1970s, it threads through tunnels, over viaducts, and along vertiginous switchbacks, offering long views across alpine meadows and glacial valleys. The road is open only from late June to October when snow clears from the upper section.
