Sighișoara's medieval citadel is one of the few permanently inhabited fortified town centres remaining in Europe. Its 14th-century clock tower, nearly 64 metres tall, anchors a tight cluster of Gothic burgher houses, cobbled lanes, and guild towers along the ridge of a hill above the Târnava Mare River. The covered wooden staircase of 175 steps leads to the hilltop Church on the Hill, which retains original 15th-century fresco fragments in the choir.
