Few towns in Europe still feel as completely medieval as Sighişoara, the hilltop citadel raised by Transylvania's Saxon craftsmen and merchants. Its clock tower, guild towers and steep cobbled lanes guarded a strategic trading position on the edge of central Europe for centuries, and the old town is by tradition the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. UNESCO listed the historic centre as World Heritage in 1999.
