Sinaia is a mountain resort town in the Prahova Valley of the southern Carpathians, historically a favoured retreat of the Romanian royal court. The town sits at roughly 800 metres, backed by the Bucegi plateau whose sheer eastern escarpment provides a dramatic backdrop visible from the main street. The Sinaia Monastery, founded in 1695, stands above the town centre and contains richly painted interior walls and a treasury of medieval manuscripts.
