Red Lake is a natural dam lake formed in 1837 when a landslide blocked the Bicaz River on the eastern edge of the Hășmaș Mountains. The skeletal trunks of conifers drowned by the rising water still protrude above the surface in clusters, giving the lake its uncanny and much-photographed character. At 983 metres, the surrounding beech and spruce forest turns vivid shades of amber and red in early October.
