Red Fort Complex

Shah Jahan moved his capital to Shahjahanabad and gave it a palace to match: the Red Fort, named for its massive red sandstone walls and joined to the older Salimgarh fort of 1546. Its pavilions, linked by the water channel called the Stream of Paradise, mark the high point of Mughal refinement — Persian, Timurid and Hindu traditions fused — and shaped later buildings and gardens from Delhi to Rajasthan. The complex was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2007.
