Sunehri Masjid, Chandni Chowk

This small eighteenth-century mosque near the Red Fort on Chandni Chowk is remembered chiefly as the vantage point from which a Persian invader is said to have watched the massacre of the city's inhabitants in 1739. Its name, meaning golden mosque, refers to the gilded copper domes that once crowned its three bays. Raised on a high plinth above the busy street, the compact structure is reached by a narrow staircase and remains an active place of prayer. Its dark association gives it an outsized place in the old city's memory.
