This large seventeenth-century mosque anchors the western end of the historic Chandni Chowk avenue, mirroring the Red Fort at the eastern end. It was commissioned by one of Emperor Shah Jahan's wives and built of red sandstone, with a single tall dome, flanking minarets and a spacious arcaded courtyard. After the 1857 uprising the British seized and sold the mosque, which was later returned to the Muslim community. Standing amid the wholesale spice and grain markets, it remains an active place of worship.
