Chandni Chowk is one of the oldest and busiest street markets in Delhi, laid out in the seventeenth century on the axis of the Red Fort by the Mughal architect Shahjahanabad. The main thoroughfare and its branching lanes specialise in silver jewellery, textiles, spices, dried fruits, wedding goods, and street food, and the area remains a working commercial district as well as a heritage zone. The chaos of rickshaws, hand carts, and vendors photographed against the backdrop of Mughal-era mosques and havelis is a defining image of old Delhi.
